Meredith Clay

Cannabis Researcher & ConsultantMJ Hemp Consulting, Texas A&M University

I am a cannabis researcher and breeder specializing in plant genetics, cultivation optimization, and plant resilience. As a Ph.D. student in Plant Breeding at Texas A&M University, my research focuses on developing industrial hemp cultivars with improved seed germination, seedling vigor, and adaptability to diverse environmental conditions. My work integrates breeding strategies, molecular genetics, agronomic evaluation, trichome analysis, and compliance testing to support the development of more resilient and sustainable cannabis and hemp production systems.

In my role as a Cannabis Research and Cultivation Consultant at Rare Earth Genomics, I have contributed to the development of novel cannabis cultivars for fiber, grain, and cannabinoid production, as well as innovative seed coat technology designed to improve germination and establishment in challenging growing environments. Through Texas A&M’s Industrial Hemp Breeding Program, I have worked to advance genetic selection methods that improve plant performance, crop uniformity, and production efficiency.

Beyond research, I am passionate about education, advocacy, and industry collaboration. I founded and served as Vice President of the Cannabis Hemp Innovation League, the first student organization at Texas A&M dedicated to cannabis research and education. I have presented my work at industry and scientific events, including the Texas Hemp Summit, Texas Cannabis Policy Conference, ASA/CSSA/SSSA Annual Meeting, and NECANN, sharing insights on cannabis genetics, breeding, trichome research, and cultivation strategies.

At MJBizCon, my goal is to contribute to forward-looking conversations on cannabis breeding, research-driven cultivation, and the role of scientific innovation in helping growers, entrepreneurs, and investors develop resilient, high-performing, market-ready cannabis products.

Genetics as Strategy: Continuous Optimization for Commercial Cannabis Cultivation

This session shows commercial growers how to flip that script. You'll learn how leading operators replace reactive trend-chasing with a structured genetic program built on continuous sourcing, trialing, and evaluation. We'll connect each decision to commercial viability, so genetics become a strategic asset rather than a guessing game.
